Trex deck with Azek railing in Mystic, CT

This project involved installing new Trex decking in the Tiki Torch color and an Azek composite railing system on the existing frame, with some modifications.  The homeowners were happy with the existing size and layout and any changes would have required substantial landscaping changes so we opted to refresh the existing structure.  In many cases the existing frame isn’t able to be reused due to either poor initial construction or just general wear and tear but that was not the case for this project.

The existing framing was in very good shape, which is quite rare.  We did detatch the ledger connection to the house and flash it properly to prevent future rot and connect it to the house using code-compliant bolts and hardware, which were lacking.  We also replaced one of the deck footing columns that had settled due to improper installation.  In addition to those improvements we removed and added new hardware and brackets at all of the joist and post-and-beam connections.  The final touch was to plane the existing joists to make sure they were completely flat and then apply a strip of adhesive backed flashing to each joist, a time consuming process but necessary, as every screw hole from the original decking is a source of rot just waiting to happen.

As a result of all the improvements, the homeowners were able to get a beautiful deck that will last decades while saving a modest amount on the framing and keeping thousands of pounds of good lumber out of the landfill!

Ipe Deck with Azek Railing in South Kingstown, RI

This ipe deck in South Kingstown really fit in perfectly with the natural surroundings.  Set back in a wooded area, the homeowner wanted to replace their failing pressure-treated deck with something that would suit their property while being low maintenance and very strong for when they entertain.  The natural siding of the house led us to look at a natural wood for the decking and ipe is the best option when letting a hardwood weather without staining or sealing.  We oiled the deck after completion but ipe does not require anything more than an occasional cleaning to preserve it’s appearance.  Over time it will turn to a beautiful silver-gray.

For a railing we selected the Azek composite railing in the Kona color as it blended in beautifully with the natural wooded surroundings.  It has a very solid look and feel but doesn’t interfere with the view from the deck.

The original deck was not flashed properly and, as a result, had substantial rot below the door as well as a large carpenter ant colony.  We were able to repair all the damage from the exterior of the building and Narragansett Pest Control exterminated the pests.  The overall cost of the repairs was minimal but we caught the rot just in time.  The rim joist of the house was completely eaten away in some sections.

Small Composite Deck in Westerly, RI

This beautiful little deck in Westerly, RI used Fiberon capped composite decking in Tudor Brown and Azek composite railing.  The existing deck was in very poor condition and the homeowners did not want their young children to use it.  A wise choice on their part as we found that the existing deck was resting on footings that didn’t even go 12″ into the ground.  Far less than the 42″ required by code for safety.

The new deck is narrow to accommodate the walk-out basement entrance and some exterior plumbing but deep enough to allow for a nice gathering area for the parents and guests to relax while the kids use the nearby swingset.  The wide staircase provides easy access from the kitchen to the back yard and grilling area.

Garapa Hardwood Deck in South Kingstown, RI

This was a fun deck project in South Kingstown, RI.  The existing deck was small and built of aging pressure-treated lumber.  The homeowners had a great vision of a large, open area that would bring the house and back yard together.  We incorporated a large, eight person, spa into the deck on it’s own level with main level that can be used for a lounge area with a gas firepit, a dining area and a grill area.

Two of the most critical design requirements were that the deck be visually open to the back yard and that it invoke some of the feeling of classic boat construction.  The husband of this couple is involved in boat restoration and has always enjoyed the clean look of wooden boats and wanted to bring some of that feel to the deck without making it overly nautical.  After considering several railing options, including glass panels and aluminum balusters, we decided on stainless steel cable rails which combine two elements of boat construction, stainless steel and rigging.  For the decking the homeowners selected garapa, a wonderful hardwood that is very similar in color to teak.  Every board is screwed and then plugged for a furniture quality finish, the whole deck and railing was then coated in oil to keep it’s vibrant color and provide UV protection.

Meranti Deck With Built-In Hot Tub

Finished mahogany deck  Deck with a recessed hot tub Curved railing on custom deckHardwood deck with white trim

The customers wanted a large meranti deck that would incorporate a very large hot tub but not take over their small back yard.  Multiple levels and continuous stairs allowed for plenty of space but cut the amount of railings by 60%!  I designed a curved end to avoid restricting the passage from the front yard to the back yard at that end of the residence.

The handrails and decking are solid meranti and the framing is pressure-treated lumber. A hidden fastener system by Eb-Ty was used for the decking.

Ipe Deck and Screened Porch in Wakefield, RI

Ipe deck with a screened porch  Finished deck with wood handrails and screen porch Cedar outdoor shower and hardwood deckCustom cedar exterior shower

This was a great project where the customers wanted to improve the back of their home and property incorporating landscaping and hardscaping with the new ipe deck construction. The existing ipe porch was small and the owners wanted a space that would allow them to cook and entertain outside as well as relax in a bug free environment.  They also wanted an outdoor shower with hot and cold water as well as a changing area near the garage to keep sand from beach trips out of the house.

The deck railings were built to match the railings on the front of the house using meranti, a durable, rot-resistant hardwood.  The decking is solid ipe with an oil coating and a hidden fastener system.  The shower is completely constructed from solid cedar with beaded glass windows for privacy.
